Getting your child ready for school can be an exciting but stressful time! Here is a back to school preparation checklist to help you along the way:
- Make sure you know what your state and school district are doing
Keep up with your state and school district’s plans for the new school year. It’s not uncommon for schools to stagger students, alternate groups that come in, or do part-time distance learning. Make sure you know what those plans mean for you. Do not be surprised if the schedule changes, maybe more than once.
- Educate children on safety
Be sure your child knows the safety guidelines to follow if they’re returning to school.
- Pediatrician check-up
Talk to your child’s pediatrician before they go back to school to make sure they are up to date on the following:
- Vaccinations
- Annual eye exams
- Physicals for sport

Get children back into the school routine a few weeks before school starts as part of the back to school preparation. Start enforcing their standard bedtime if you did not keep it over the summer. In the same way try to ensure they get up at the same time every day. This will ease the transition out of summer and prepare them for a more formal schedule.
- Create a study area
Your child should have a designated study area during the school year. In the case of remote learning, this will be especially useful. Books and computers should be accommodated on a good work surface. Make sure the environment is quiet so they can concentrate and well lit so they can read and write without strain.
- Identify meal ideas and make a list of them
During the school year, schedules become more rigid, so meal planning is a good idea. Think about what you can pack for lunch that is nutritious.
How do I motivate my child to prepare for school?
Students who are good learners do not just happen to be good learners. A child’s personality and disposition plays an important part in their willingness to learn. Any student can become a good learner if they possess the right aptitude and motivation. Limiting learning to the classroom is one of the biggest mistakes teachers and parents can make when developing good learners.
Although the classroom is likely to be the primary source of instruction, children’s intellectual, social and academic growth should extend beyond the classroom.
