Home Away from Home in a Nursery Environment
As a child many of us can remember being in nursery and school environments and just wanting to return home, which also happens to many of us in our adult life. This is all due to the sense of security and comfort that is associated with home. Once children feel safe and secure in a nursery believe it will create a pathway that builds confidence, develops learning in a holistic manner and brings enjoyment.
Our Nursery has an open-door policy where parents are always welcome to come in for a visit sharing views and ideas. On visiting the nursery, it is clear to see and feel a very calm and cozy environment with soft tones in the décor that are therapeutic and soothing. The resources in the Nursery has been selected with an immense amount of thought regarding creating an enabling environment which is one of the themes of the Early Years Foundation Stage (British Curriculum).
As children are very insightful and aware of feelings and emotions the home away from home feel is and should also be carried through the atmosphere regarding the respectful, nurturing and caring treatment of all who enter the nursery especially the children. This in turn creates an emotional environment that again supports security and comfort, very similar to a happy home.
Positive relationships are another theme which runs through the Early Years foundation stage that is implemented in the Nursery. It is of upmost importance that we work as a team with families and other professionals in the community to meet the children’s individual needs. A key feature of keeping a positive emotional environment is the Keyperson system where by each child attending the nursery has a keyperson who is a teacher whom focuses on that child as unique individual.
